ArcelorMittal Applauds Liberia’s MCC Compact as Mining Fuels Economic Optimism into 2025 By The Analyst News On Dec 20, 2024 20 0 MONROVIA – President Joseph Boakai announced a milestone achievement for Liberia on Wednesday evening, revealing that the country had secured a second compact from the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), a U.S. government initiative aimed at reducing poverty and fostering economic growth. In a live address delivered from the grounds of the Executive Mansion in Monrovia, President Boakai celebrated the news as a testament to Liberia’s progress in governance and reform. “According to the MCC, Liberia has qualified for a second compact due to our outstanding performance in governance and reform,” he said. “This giant achievement will unlock resources for our development agenda and help address the binding constraints to growth in our country.” The president lauded the collective efforts of Liberians, emphasizing the significance of the achievement for the nation. “This is not just a victory for the government but for all Liberians. It reflects the international community’s confidence in our ability to deliver progress through unity and reform,” he said. “Let us join hands to celebrate this collective success.” His remarks sparked widespread celebrations across the country, with Liberians expressing hope that the compact, alongside key foreign direct investments, would provide a much-needed boost to public infrastructure and economic opportunities. ArcelorMittal Liberia, one of the nation’s most prominent private investors, joined in the celebrations, congratulating President Boakai and the Liberian people. The company reaffirmed its long-term commitment to Liberia, highlighting the alignment between MCC’s principles of economic growth and good governance and its own investment strategy. “ArcelorMittal believes that economic growth is more effective at reducing poverty in well-governed countries,” said a company official. As Liberia’s largest foreign investor, ArcelorMittal has committed over $2.5 billion to the country, making it the second-largest employer after the government. The company’s $1.7 billion Phase Two expansion project, which is currently underway, includes critical upgrades to Liberia’s infrastructure. These efforts encompass expanding the Buchanan-Yekepa railway, renovating the Buchanan Port, and constructing a state-of-the-art ore processing plant in Zolowee, Nimba County. These investments have already generated jobs, supported community development, and bolstered Liberia’s broader economic growth. ArcelorMittal views the second MCC compact as a critical complement to its efforts, with the potential to in an important way enhance the country’s economic trajectory. An unnamed senior official at ArcelorMittal Liberia noted the synergy between the compact and the company’s investments. “If ArcelorMittal expands next year and with the MCC compact, coupled with the mining sector’s growth, the country is expected to generate substantial government revenue through taxes and royalties and create much-needed jobs for Liberians,” the official said.

Fire in Grand Bassa County ..... fire situation that destroyed business centers of some of our citizens in the Capital City Buchanan ... During the late evening of Wednesday, December 18, an emergency alert through phone call was received concerning an abrupt fire that gutted a mini-motorbike store and Gas Container around the intersection of Tubman and Preston streets; a situation that placed the owners at Loss. Through a coordinated effort, the LNP, ArcelorMittal Liberia Management, the County Fire Service team and others were contacted by our Leadership; the calls that resulted to appropriate response, while some residents were applying firsthand firefighting skills to prevent further damages to nearby homes and businesses. As we commend the collective bravery of passerbys, the Liberia National Fire Service, Liberia National Police and our corporate partner -Arcelormittal Liberia that quenched the blazing fire and restored calm; the County Government would like to express its empathy in solidarity with the affected business people as Security apparatus launch inquiries concerning the cause of Fire. Meanwhile, the obligation for more awareness on fire prevention remains a priority for our Administration along with the National Fire Service and other relevant stakeholder institutions. ArcelorMittal Liberia: A Beacon of Support During Crisis When tragedy struck in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, the community witnessed the critical importance of corporate responsibility. A fire outbreak at a local gas station exposed a significant challenge: the lack of a functioning fire truck in the county. In this moment of crisis, ArcelorMittal Liberia rose to the occasion. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the company deployed its own fire truck to assist in controlling the blaze. This timely intervention undoubtedly prevented what could have been a far greater disaster. ArcelorMittal's swift response demonstrates their commitment not just to business operations but to the safety and well-being of Liberians. In times like these, it’s clear that companies like ArcelorMittal play a vital role in bridging gaps in essential services. As a nation, this incident reminds us of the importance of public-private partnerships in addressing infrastructural challenges. Let this serve as a call to action for stakeholders to ensure that communities like Grand Bassa have access to critical resources, while also appreciating the efforts of organizations like ArcelorMittal that step up when it matters most. ArcelorMittal Liberia, thank you for your leadership and unwavering support in ensuring the safety of our people.

I woke up this morning and received a message from a big brother, suggesting that I should refrain from speaking out because I turned down a government job. He implied that I should have accepted the position to help support the system; since I didn’t, I should keep quiet for not offering my skills. The funny thing is that asking me to submit my resume doesn’t guarantee a job. My refusal to submit my resume was personal. However, if I had even taken that job, I would likely either have been fired by now or left on my own. I am not one to stay silent when I see problems, especially after offering solutions privately that continue to be ignored. I believe in speaking up when necessary. When the time is right, I will contribute in my own way. This is one of the reasons I chose to step back from the online space last December, as some assumed my support to President Boakia then was because I was seeking a government position. Even after going offline, I was still contacted through WhatsApp asking me to send in my resume from more than two big brother including the one who wrote me; which I appreciated. But to suggest that I should remain silent out of obligation for a favor is misguided. There is no big brother who can claim, that Kelvin asked me for government jobs. Not a single one. If I had wanted to work in Liberia, I would have preferred to lead the HR team at ArcelorMittal, which also reached out to me directly late last year. I know you will see this. I’m sorry you blocked me because I got misunderstood by you when you saw my response to you as being rude. I do apologize.

Liberia’s Economic Outlook December 17, 2024 by Ousmane Sharif Liberia’s economy has shown resilience and growth in recent years, with projections indicating continued expansion. In 2023, the economy grew by approximately 4.5%, driven largely by the mining and construction sectors on the supply side, and increased public spending on the demand side. Looking ahead, growth is forecasted at 5.2% in 2024 and 6.2% in 2025, propelled by the expansion of services, agriculture, and existing mining projects. Inflation is projected to decline to 8.4% in 2024 and 5.7% in 2025, due to anticipated stability in the exchange rate and tighter monetary policy. The fiscal deficit is expected to edge from 3.4% of GDP to 4.2% in 2024 and deteriorate further to 4.5% in 2025, on projected increases in government expenditure. The current account deficit is forecast to increase to 23.7% of GDP in 2024 and to 24.6% in 2025, due to projected increases in imports. A significant contributor to this positive outlook is the mining sector, particularly with investments like ArcelorMittal’s Phase Two Expansion project. This initiative is expected to double iron ore production over the medium term and triple it by 2030, enhancing export revenues and stimulating economic growth.

ArcelorMittal Liberia to Face Court on December 16 Over Former Employee Gbormie Seeks Justice The Sixth Judicial Circuit Civil Law Court in Montserrado County has become the latest battleground for a lawsuit against global steel giant ArcelorMittal, as former employee Ambrose Gbormie and his wife file a complaint citing gross human rights violations and negligence. This case is just one of 48 alleged human rights violation cases linked to the company in Liberia, demanding urgent attention from local and international authorities. The lawsuit, filed before Resident Judge J. Kennedy Peabody, accuses ArcelorMittal of causing irreparable harm to Mr. Gbormie, his wife, and their twelve children due to what they describe as deliberate and negligent conduct during his decade-long tenure at the company.

Unveiling Motives of Anti-AML Campaign Recent media reports alleging litigation and falsely implicating ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) in politics represent a continuation of a sustained propaganda campaign sponsored by vested interests, particularly High-Power Exploration (HPX) and the Solway Mining Group. These baseless allegations, surfacing at this critical moment, are strategically designed to undermine AML’s longstanding commitment to Liberia’s development. They aim to distract attention from the opportunistic motives of rival entities vying for control over the nation’s vital rail and port infrastructure. This campaign comes at a time when the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) project Liberia’s economy to grow by 5-6%, largely driven by the mining sector. Media narratives targeting AML, widely seen as a key driver of this growth, have intensified in recent months. This latest round of misinformation appears calculated to disrupt ongoing government efforts to finalize AML’s Phase-2 expansion deal, which promises to deliver 3,000 new jobs, boost government revenue, and expand funding for social development projects—critical interventions that could greatly improve Liberia’s economy. Liberians must recognize that HPX and its collaborators have no investments in Liberia.

The workers have stated they will continue their action until all their demands are fully addressed. However, efforts by Ablee-jay Media to reach AFCON officials for comment have been unsuccessful, as calls to the company went unanswered. LPP Slams Boakai Gov’t for “Aiding Resource Exploitation” The opposition Liberian People’s Party (LPP) has strongly criticized the administration of President Joseph N. Boakai for recognizing Bea Mountain Mining Corporation and ArcelorMittal Liberia for their tax contributions despite growing concerns about the transparency and equity of their financial practices. In a press statement dated December 5, 2024, signed by J. Yanqui Zaza, the party’s chairman, the LPP described the decision as troubling and perplexing, raising significant ethical questions about how Liberia’s natural resource wealth is managed. The LPP accused ArcelorMittal Liberia, a subsidiary of global steel giant ArcelorMittal, of engaging in practices that amount to deceptive financial reporting. The party alleged that ArcelorMittal Liberia sold 6 million metric tons of iron ore to its parent company for $74 per ton—substantially below the global market average, which ranged between $83 and $150 from 2020 to 2022. This pricing strategy allegedly minimized the revenue reported in Liberia, reducing the country’s tax revenues while maximizing profits for the parent company. In 2021, ArcelorMittal’s parent company declared a staggering taxable income of $13.2 billion and distributed $4.4 billion in dividends globally. Similarly, in 2022, the parent company reported $9.1 billion in taxable income and distributed $5.3 billion in dividends. However, despite owning a 30% stake in ArcelorMittal Liberia, Liberia received no dividends. The LPP highlighted this as a glaring example of multinational corporations exploiting resource-rich nations like Liberia while limiting their financial obligations to the host country.

Kennedy Peabody, accuses ArcelorMittal of causing irreparable harm to Mr. Gbormie, his wife, and their twelve children due to what they described as deliberate and negligent conduct during his decade-long tenure at the company.

ArcelorMittal will export Liberia's iron ore in unprocessed form for the next 25 years, totalling 30 million metric tonnes per year. This amount does not include the 30 million metric tonnes exported by each of the other businesses, Vendetta, China Union, and Bao Chico. Given this environment, is it time for Liberia to establish a national mining firm to better manage and capitalise on its mineral resources? Our current paradigm will not produce development, and if this narrative continues, we will not progress as a country. How do you want us to build our infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, and rails? You expect us to pay a premium price for steel products while you export 30 million metric tonnes of iron ore each year? Something must be wrong with these confused investors. "My husband’s injuries and suffering have left a void in our home. This is not just a loss for him, it is a loss for all of us.” We are calling on the Government of Liberia and International Human Rights Organizations United Nations Human Rights, Independent National Commission on Human Rights - INCHR, Human Rights Watch, Civil Society Human Rights Advocacy Platform to intervene into matter of the Former Superintendent for Local Government Affairs at ArcelorMittal Liberia , Ambrose John Gbormie. Mr. Gbormie while serving the institution from 2011 to 2022, Arcelormittal Liberia denied him to go for "leave or vacation". He got sick by developing problem on his eyes and forcefully left the institution for medication. While seeking treatment, the company dismissed him. Today, Mr. Gbormie is a blind man. But the wicked part of the drama is that, Arcelormittal Liberia has refused to give his benefits. The company asked him to signed a "waiver document" Mr. Gbormie has twelve children. His wife Ann-Dora Gbormie is the one taking care of the twelve children. Just imagine, a woman-in-charge of twelve children. We have also established that there are 48 human rights violation cases including Ambrose Gbormie committed by Arcelormittal Liberia. The Gbormie family argues that ArcelorMittal’s failure to adhere to labor laws and human rights

Mr. President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr, it is true that ArcelorMittal Liberia will help your Government but kindly intervene in the matter of a mother of twelve (12) children whose husband has been inhumanly handled by Arcelomettal and today the guy question has became blind. Now the entity, Arcelomettal has refused to give the benefit of Ambrose Gbormie until he can sign a "waiver document". My concern here is the woman Ann-Dora Gbormie who's taking care of twelve (12) children. Is not easy on her. The Government of Liberia and Human Rights Organizations kindly rescue her to get her husband benefits in order to take care of the children.
